Station 4:
SH 123/North-South Connector and the Medical Center

The SH 123 and North-South Connector concepts include recommendations to add connectivity and plan for future growth along the east side of IH-35. The concepts include a new proposed roadway and mixed-use development in the Medical District area near CHRISTUS Hospital. The concepts feature green space, pedestrian and bike paths, and housing, commercial and retail uses.

These improvements aim to reduce congestion into downtown, improve safety, create more connectivity between points of interest, and provide development that spurs economic growth and attracts stable, high-paying jobs.

North-South Connector Segment 1:
SH 80 to Staples Rd.

This rural street section is almost entirely within floodplain, and accommodates four travel lanes with shoulders, a multi-use path on one side, and a wide median and planting strips to absorb stormwater.

A) Planting strip for protection from traffic

North-South Connector Segment 2:
Staples Rd. to Wonder World Dr.

This urban street section is found in the medical district concept and provides four travel lanes with parallel parking, a wide median for landscaping and turn lanes. separated bike paths, and sidewalks with planting strips.

Boulevard Concept:

A) Wide sidewalks protected from roadway
B) Planting strip for protection from traffic
C) One-way protected bike lane
D) Parallel parking with separation from pedestrians and cyclists
E) Two travel lanes in each direction
F) Landscaped median to improve safety, add tree cover, and capture stormwater runoff


North-South Connector Segment 3:
Wonder World Dr. to Posey Rd.

This street section will primarily be in an industrial area and accommodates four travel lanes. a wide median for turn lanes and landscaping. and multi-use paths separated from the travel lanes with planting strips.

Activity Center Concept 3 – Medical Center

This concept shows a new mixed-use development along SH 123 between Austin Community College and Wonderworld Drive with a variety of live and work options for medical professionals and other residents.

The combination of the North—South Connector boulevard, the SH 123 frontage roads, and the connected street grid add to the urban character and create connectivity to nearby neighborhoods.
